Product Introduction

A turbine flowmeter is a volumetric flow measurement device that operates on the principle of mechanical energy conversion. It is classified as a velocity flowmeter because it measures the speed of the fluid to calculate the volumetric flow rate.

Key Components:

  • Rotor (Turbine): A multi-bladed rotor mounted on a low-friction bearing assembly, placed centrally in the flow stream. The blade angle is optimized for the fluid type.

  • Magnetic Pickup Coil (Sensor): A permanent magnet and coil assembly mounted externally on the meter body.

  • Meter Body: The housing that directs the fluid axially over the rotor.

How It Works:

  1. Fluid Drive: As fluid passes through the meter body, it strikes the angled blades of the rotor, imparting a force that causes the rotor to spin.

  2. Proportional Speed: The rotational speed (RPM) of the rotor is directly proportional to the average velocity of the fluid. A higher flow rate results in a faster spin.

  3. Signal Generation: The rotor blades are made of a ferromagnetic material. Each time a blade passes the magnetic pickup coil, it disturbs the magnetic field. This change in magnetic flux induces an AC voltage pulse in the coil.

  4. Flow Calculation: The frequency of this pulse signal (f, in Hz) is linearly proportional to the flow rate (Q). The flow rate is calculated using the meter’s K-factor.

    • FormulaQ = f / K

    • The K-factor (pulses per unit volume, e.g., pulses/gallon) is determined by factory calibration and is unique to each meter. It represents the number of pulses generated for a given volume of fluid passing through.

Product Advantages

Application Field

1. Oil & Gas Hydrocarbon Transfer

  • Application: Custody transfer of refined petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and crude oil. They are used in loading racks, pipelines, and terminals where financial transaction and fiscal accountability are critical.

  • Why Used: They offer the very high accuracy (often 0.5% or better) required for trade and transfer applications. Their performance is well-characterized for a variety of hydrocarbons.

2. Chemical & Process Industries

  • Application: Batching and process flow measurement of chemicals, solvents, and process liquids (e.g., alcohols, acetone, benzene, resins) that are non-abrasive and non-corrosive.

  • Why Used: They provide precise measurement for recipe formulation and batch control. Models are available in a variety of corrosion-resistant materials (e.g., 316 Stainless Steel, Hastelloy) to handle different fluids.

3. Aerospace & Engine Test Stands

  • Application: Measuring fuel consumption in aircraft engines and during ground testing of automotive and industrial engines.

  • Why Used: Their extremely fast response time can track rapid changes in flow rate. They provide highly accurate data essential for calculating engine efficiency and performance metrics.

4. Water & Irrigation

  • Application: Measuring the flow of water, treated wastewater, and other low-viscosity liquids in industrial water systems, irrigation networks, and aquaponics.

  • Why Used: They are cost-effective for measuring large volumes of water with good accuracy. While not as common as some other technologies here, they are used where their specific advantages (like pulse output for totalization) are needed.
